Restrict hides someone's new comments and moves their DMs to requests without telling them. Here's how it compares with Block and Mute, step by step.

When you restrict someone on Instagram, their new comments on your posts are visible only to them unless you approve them, and their DMs move to Message requests without notifications. They can't see when you're online or have read their messages, and they aren't notified.

Instagram Restrict lets you quietly filter someone's comments and DMs without blocking them, [unfollowing them](/blog/how-to-see-who-unfollowed-you-on-instagram) or tipping them off. I'll show you exactly what changes for both of you, how it stacks up against Block and Mute, and the four places in the app where you can switch it on or off.

## What Restrict changes for you and for them

Restrict is a filter on one person's interactions with you. Their new comments on your posts become visible only to them, unless you approve them. Their chat moves out of your main inbox into Message requests, and any future messages land there too. You stop getting notifications for both.

On the messaging side, they can't see when you're online or whether you've read what they sent. You can open their messages and they'll never get a read receipt. Group chats are the one exception: if you share one, Instagram warns you that you'll still see the restricted account's messages there and lets you stay or leave.

What doesn't change matters just as much. They still follow you, they can still see your posts, Reels and Stories, and they can still like things. Nothing on their end looks broken, which is the whole point.

Say a coworker leaves a pointed remark under every post you share. [Blocking them](/blog/how-to-know-if-someone-blocked-you-on-instagram) could make Monday awkward. With Restrict, the remarks still show on their screen, nobody else sees them, and you decide later whether any of them deserve to go public.

- Tap See comment to read a hidden comment from a restricted account.
- Tap Approve, then Approve again, to make it visible to everyone.
- Or tap Delete, or simply leave it hidden.

## Does the person know you restricted them?

No. Instagram doesn't send a notification when you restrict someone. Instagram's own guide to Block, Mute and Restrict says Restrict works without alerting them, and there's no list in the app that tells anyone who has restricted them.

Could they work it out? Only by noticing patterns. If they ask a friend to check a post and their comment isn't there, or they notice your read receipts never show up, they might guess. Neither is proof, though, because anyone can turn off read receipts and activity status for everyone. That ambiguity is what makes Restrict feel softer than a block.

## Instagram Restrict vs Block vs Mute

These three tools solve different problems. Mute only changes what you see. Restrict changes how their comments and messages reach you and your audience. Block cuts off their access to your profile and messages, and it's the only one of the three with lasting side effects.

- Pick Mute when someone's posts or Stories clutter your feed but they do nothing wrong.
- Pick Restrict when their comments or messages bother you and you'd rather not make a scene.
- Pick Block when you don't want them seeing your profile or contacting you at all.

*What each control changes, based on Instagram's Help Center pages for Restrict, Block and Mute*

| What changes | Restrict | Block | Mute |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Their new comments | Visible only to them | Can't comment at all | Unchanged |
| Their past likes, comments | Stay as they are | Removed, not restored later | Unchanged |
| Their DMs to you | Go to Message requests | Not delivered, even later | Chat mute silences alerts |
| Your read receipts, status | Hidden from them | You can't message them | Unchanged |
| Your posts and Stories | They still see them | They lose access | They still see them |
| Following | Stays as is | Connection ends | Stays as is |
| Are they notified? | No | No | No |

## How to restrict someone on Instagram

There are four routes in the Instagram app for Android and iPhone. Use whichever is closest to the problem, and double-check the username first, since lookalike accounts are common. On Instagram Lite, only the profile route works.

- From their profile: open their profile, tap the three-dot Options icon in the top right, then tap Restrict.
- From a chat: tap Messages, open the chat, tap their name at the top, tap Options in the top right, tap Restrict, then tap Restrict again to confirm.
- From a comment: go to your post, tap Comments, tap and hold their comment, then tap Restrict account.
- From settings: tap your profile picture, tap Menu in the top right, then under How others can interact with you tap Restricted. Tap Next, search the username and tap Restrict.

## Using Restrict when your account is growing

Restrict earns its keep once more strangers find you. When a Reel travels beyond your followers, the comments under it fill with people you've never met, and now and then one of them just wants a reaction. Restricting that one account keeps the thread clean for everyone else, and you don't lose a follower or start a public fight.

If one restricted account turns into a wave from several, Instagram's Limits feature temporarily hides comments and messages from groups of accounts instead of one at a time. Our [account safety guide](/safety) covers the other controls worth setting up before you need them.

And if you're putting effort into your profile, it's worth seeing it the way a new visitor does. The [free profile scan](/scan) shows your engagement rate against accounts your size, your posting rhythm and which recent posts worked, and when you're ready for more of the right people to find you, [Ganicly's Instagram growth plans](/instagram) promote your public profile to an audience you define, at a steady daily pace.

## How to unrestrict someone and what changes back

Unrestricting takes two taps. Once you do it, their future messages go straight to your main inbox again, and their future comments post normally without waiting for your approval.

Before you switch it off, I'd clear out anything still waiting for you. Approve or delete the hidden comments you care about, and reply to or delete the chat sitting in Message requests, so nothing old pops up where you don't expect it.

- From their profile: tap Options in the top right, then tap Unrestrict.
- From settings: open Menu, tap Restricted, then tap Unrestrict next to their username.
- From a comment: tap and hold one of their comments, then tap Unrestrict account.

## Checklist

- Match the tool to the problem: Mute for your feed, Restrict for their comments and DMs, Block for access.
- Check the username before you restrict anyone.
- Confirm the change under Menu, then Restricted.
- Handle hidden comments and Message requests before you unrestrict.

## Questions

### What will happen if I restrict an account on Instagram?

Their new comments on your posts will be visible only to them until you approve them, and their DMs move to Message requests. You won't get notifications from them, and they can't see your online status or read receipts. They aren't told, they keep following you, and they can still see and like your posts and Stories.

### How long does a restriction last?

There's no timer on Restrict. The account stays on your Restricted list until you tap Unrestrict, whether that's a day later or a year later. If you want something that switches itself off, Instagram's Limits feature is the temporary option: it hides comments and messages from groups of accounts for a set period, then lifts on its own.

### How do I unrestrict someone on Instagram?

Open their profile, tap Options in the top right and tap Unrestrict. You can also go to Menu, then Restricted, and tap Unrestrict next to their username, or tap and hold one of their comments and choose Unrestrict account. Their future messages then go to your main inbox and their comments post normally.

### How do I know if I was blocked or restricted on Instagram?

If you were blocked, you usually can't open the person's profile or message them at all. If you were restricted, everything looks normal on your side, because your comments still appear to you and you can still see their posts. Missing read receipts aren't proof either way, since anyone can switch them off for every chat.

### Can a restricted person see my Instagram Story?

Yes, a restricted person can still watch your Stories, because Restrict doesn't touch what they can see. To keep your Story from one person, use Hide story and live from in your settings, under Story, live and location. That hides future Stories from them while leaving your profile and posts visible.

### Is restricting the same as soft blocking?

No, they're different. A soft block usually means blocking someone and immediately unblocking them, which removes them as a follower and deletes their old likes and comments. Restrict keeps the follow and their past activity in place and only filters what they do from now on, so it's the gentler choice for someone you still see in person.
