Reels vs posts on Instagram
Use Reels for demos, carousels when either still format works, and photos when extra slides add nothing. Check your mix.

What the number means
Choose a Reel for motion or a demonstration, a carousel when either still-image format works, and a single photo when extra slides add nothing. Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in October 2024 that carousels often get more reach than photos. Check your current mix before planning the next post.
Enter a public username to see the share of recent posts that are video, including Reels. Use that percentage to describe what you publish now, then use the format comparison below to decide what to make next.
How it works
- 1
Enter the public Instagram username you want to check.
- 2
The checker identifies video and still posts across up to 24 recent posts.
- 3
Read the video share, then use the comparison below to choose the format for your next idea.
Instagram Reels vs posts vs Stories
Start with what the viewer needs to see. Motion calls for video. A comparison or sequence gives you a reason to use a carousel. One complete visual can stay a single photo.
Keep carousels in that mix. Among photo and carousel posts in the feed, carousels tend to earn the most engagement.
For reach, Mosseri says carousels often outperform single photos. The table puts these strengths next to the practical production work for each format.
| Format | Choose it for | Strength or tool scope | Work to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reel | Movement and demonstrations | Instagram has put Reels at the center of the app. | Film the action and edit the sequence. |
| Carousel | Comparisons, sequences and collections | Often leads feed engagement among still formats; Mosseri said in 2024 that carousels often get more reach than photos. | Choose images and order the slides. |
| Single photo | One image that communicates the whole point | Mosseri advised choosing a carousel when either still format would work. | Prepare one clear image. |
| Stories | Plan separately from this post-format check | Not included in the checker's video-versus-still calculation. | Keep separate from the feed mix below. |
Instagram Reels share checker
This checker answers a specific planning question: how much of this account's recent content is video? It checks up to 24 recent public posts and calculates the video share. Each carousel counts as one post, regardless of how many slides it contains.
A sample with at least 40% video receives the video-first label. That cutoff is Ganicly's descriptive category, not an Instagram standard or a recommended publishing target.
Use the result alongside the Instagram engagement rate checker, which shows average likes and comments and compares engagement with the benchmark the tool uses for your account size.
Why Reels instead of posts?
Use a Reel when the action is the explanation. For a product demonstration, plan the starting problem, the product in use and the finished result. Use a carousel when the viewer needs a sequence of labeled images instead.
Sample content brief: show how a desk organizer clears a workspace. A 15-second Reel could show the clutter, the sorting and the finished desk. A five-slide carousel could show the problem, the organizer, the sorting steps, a detail and the result.
Choose the version that makes the demonstration clearer with the material you have. If one finished image tells the whole story, keep it as a photo.
When carousels still win
Choose a carousel over a single photo when both formats fit the idea. Mosseri explains that multiple pieces of media can create more interactions and, on average, more reach.
He also described a second chance for carousels: if someone sees the post without swiping, Instagram may show it again starting from another slide. Make each slide useful on its own, then arrange the collection so the sequence still makes sense.
For a suitable carousel, consider adding music. Mosseri said this makes it eligible for video experiences such as the Reels tab. That gives an image-based idea another option without requiring you to film it.
What about the 5-3-1 and 4-1-1 rules?
Build your weekly mix around the job each post needs to do. The sample below is a format plan built on that idea, not a version of the 5-3-1 or 4-1-1 rule.
Follow Mosseri's carousel advice when either still-image format would work. Reserve video for an idea that benefits from motion, and keep a single photo when extra slides add nothing. Write the content brief first, then assign the format.
Check your current cadence with the posting frequency checker before adding that mix to your schedule.
Sample Monday post:
a Reel showing the product in use.
Sample Wednesday post:
a carousel comparing options or explaining steps.
Sample Friday post:
one finished image, if the image communicates the whole point.

Do reels get more views than posts?
There is no single views winner. Carousels typically lead feed engagement among still formats, and Instagram head Adam Mosseri says carousels often get more reach than photos. Choose video when motion helps explain your idea, rather than treating views, reach and engagement as interchangeable.
What are the disadvantages of reels?
The practical trade-off is the filming and editing your idea needs. Before committing, list the shots, on-screen explanations and edits required. Sketch the same idea as a carousel, too. If images communicate it clearly, Mosseri's carousel advice gives you a reason to keep that option rather than making video by default.
Why reels instead of posts?
Choose a Reel when viewers need to see movement or a process. Show the starting problem, demonstrate the action and finish with the result. Choose a carousel when the useful information is a sequence of images or comparisons. The format should serve the explanation, not dictate what you create.
How to get the maximum reach on reels?
For an image-based idea, a carousel with music gives you a route into the Reels tab. Mosseri advises adding music so carousels are eligible for video experiences. Select a useful image sequence, put the slides in a clear order and add music that fits, rather than forcing the idea into video.
Should everything be a Reel?
No, keep still-image formats when they explain the idea better. Use a carousel for comparisons or a sequence, and a single photo when another slide would add nothing. Mosseri's advice specifically supports choosing a carousel over a photo when either format would work.
What does the Instagram Reels share checker count?
The checker calculates the share of video posts, including Reels, among up to 24 recent public posts. A carousel counts as one post. The worked example below shows the calculation: divide the number of video posts by the total number of posts, then multiply by 100.
Does the checker need my password?
No, the checker uses a public Instagram username without an Instagram login. Ganicly never asks for your password. Tools and the free scan reuse the same public profile data for up to 6 hours, so checking the same username during that period shows the same numbers. Free tools keep no visitor history.
