TikTok character limit and caption checker
TikTok captions allow 4,000 characters in-app. Check other text limits and measure a public account's usual caption length.
Grow this number a little every day.
Promote your public TikTok profile to your chosen audience. Growth follows a daily limit that increases with your account size, so a small account cannot receive a large plan's full range.

What the number means
TikTok limits: caption 4,000 characters in-app or 2,200 UTF-16 units for direct video publishing; bio 80, or 160 on expanded bios; username 24; display name 30. The 150-character comment cap no longer applies to every account in 2026.
The account checker measures published captions, not pasted drafts. Enter a public username to see average caption length, a short, medium, or long label, and engagement across up to 24 recent posts.
How it works
- 1
Enter the username of a public TikTok account.
- 2
The checker counts characters in recent captions, including zero for a missing caption.
- 3
Review the average length, its label, and the account's engagement rate.

TikTok character limits in 2026
Match the text to the field before you trim it. A video description belongs in the caption allowance, not the comment allowance. Your username and display name have their own fields, so leave the bio for what you publish and who it helps.
The table separates the native app from direct video publishing because they use different caption allowances. It also shows where some accounts have expanded fields. Check the completed text in the publishing or profile-editing screen you actually use.
| Before | Subject-first version | New length |
|---|---|---|
| Try this! | Snake plant care: water less. | 29 characters |
| Watch this | Fix a leaking faucet. | 21 characters |
Put the subject first in TikTok captions
Put the subject before the reaction. Specific topic words and relevant hashtags help TikTok search understand the video. For this illustrative sample account, these edits tell the reader what the video contains without asking them to guess.
The plant caption uses 29 characters. Adding ' #PlantCare' costs 11, bringing it to 40. Adding ' 😀' produces 42 visible characters but 43 UTF-16 units: the emoji uses two units and the space uses one.
Spend the remaining space on steps, materials, or product details. Preview the opening in the route you publish through before posting.
| Average length | Label |
|---|---|
| 120 characters or fewer | Short |
| More than 120 through 400 characters | Medium |
| More than 400 characters | Long |
Compare caption length with account engagement
The checker measures descriptions across up to 24 recent posts. It averages their character counts, including zero for missing captions, and places the account's overall engagement beside that average. The label describes its current writing style.
Engagement gives context for the sample; the checker does not group performance by caption length. Compare videos on similar subjects before choosing which description style to repeat. Use the free scan to inspect stronger and weaker posts alongside posting rhythm, then pick a clear change to test.
How to bypass TikTok comment limits
There is no reliable way to bypass the comment limit, and direct messages have no fixed character cap you can plan around. For a comment that does not fit, keep the answer and remove repeated setup. Put a genuinely separate point in its own reply rather than searching for a hidden formatting trick.
For direct messages, work from the exact restriction notice in TikTok. Check whether it refers to the text you entered or to messaging access, then follow any guidance attached to that notice. Keep that troubleshooting separate from shortening a comment.
Video duration and bio links need separate checks
Video length is measured in time; caption length is measured in text. If TikTok rejects an upload, check which field the notice identifies before editing the caption. For a bio link, look for the link option when editing your profile.
Check video-duration allowances in the upload screen and link access in the profile editor. An expanded bio gives room for words, not evidence of link eligibility. Write the bio around your topic and audience, then check link access separately.

What is the maximum character limit for TikTok captions?
The TikTok app allows 4,000 characters for a caption. Direct video publishing has a separate allowance of 2,200 UTF-16 units, which counts some emojis as two units. Include hashtags and mentions in the completed text, then use the allowance for your publishing route.
What is the new character limit for TikTok comments in 2026?
There is no single new comment maximum for 2026. The standard limit is 150 characters, while some accounts can already post longer comments. Paste your draft into your own comment box and check what it accepts before treating 150 characters as your account's cap.
How many characters can I have in my TikTok bio?
The standard bio allows 80 characters, and some accounts have expanded 160-character bios. Open your bio editor and check the allowance available on your account. Put your topic and audience first, then add a reason to follow if you have room.
Do longer captions work on TikTok?
Longer captions make sense when the video needs instructions or extra context. Name the subject first, then add steps, materials, or product details that help the reader. Compare descriptions on similar videos rather than attributing every engagement difference to length. The maximum allowance is room to use, not a writing target.
Do you need 1000 followers on TikTok to put a link in bio?
Check the link option in your TikTok profile editor to see whether your account has access. Bio length and link eligibility are separate questions. Use the profile's available options to check access rather than its character allowance, then write your bio around your topic and audience.
Can I paste a caption here to count its characters?
No, this is a public-account caption checker rather than a draft counter. Enter a username to see the average length of recent descriptions and the account's engagement rate. For a draft, count the completed text with a counter that reports UTF-16 units if you use direct video publishing.
Does it need my password?
No, the username lookup needs no TikTok password or login. It uses public profile and recent post data. Results show when the data was checked and whether it is fresh or cached. The same profile data is reused for up to 6 hours across Ganicly's tools and free scan.
